Linkwheel and it’s effect on SERP rankings

Linkwheel is a new emerging, effective link building strategy which will help increase SERP rankings and drive lot of traffic to our website. In a Linkwheel, a group of pages on web2.0 sites that talk about specific services or products which are linked to each other and also link to the main site which we intend to push up the rankings. This linking resembles a wheel where all these web 2.0 sites linked to each other as in a bicycle wheel and the main site or primary product page remains in the center focus and get spoke backlinks from these web 2.0 sites.

This strategy was previously done by many folks before and this was also called as “authority hubs”. In an authority hub different sites hosted on different Ips, will link to each other and also link to the main hub site. If the sites that have hosted on different servers are authority sites, then high amount of link juice is passed over to the main hub site. But the problem with this strategy was that the sites need to be hosted in different locations and the hosted sites will get authority only after some period of time. So it took much long time to see the benefit until the sites get authority. Now this strategy can be easily done with web 2.0 sites which already have good authority and some already gained lot of weight in SEs. So there is no headache of hosting the sites in different IPs and wait for it until it gets some authority.

How to create a Linkwheel

Setting up a linkwheel is easy. We have to determine first which of the web 2.0 property that we are going to use it for our Linkwheel. We need to write neat and unique articles that are to be posted in these web 2.0 sites like wikipedia, Blogger, squidoo etc. An article in a web 2.0 property that constitute a Linkwheel, will have a link to an article in other web 2.0 property that constitue a Linkwheel, and this article will link to the article in another property thereby creating a cycle of link each giving away just one link to the other property. These articles will also have a link to the main site that we target. So that each of the property acts as spoke to the site which connects the target site we promote. The concept is better illustrated with the picture given below.

Is this a blackhat technique?

In my point of view, Linkwheel is not a black hat technique if it is add value to the end user. This is actually we are utilizing the power of social media sites by giving far exposure to our site content to the public. We are just leveraging the authority of web 2.0 sites and linking them in a way that they give larger effect.

To build a effective Linkwheel, it is more important that these article in the web 2.0 sites that we have chosen need to be indexed in Search engines. Because broken links in a Linkwheel would not yield much effect. So that we need to choose a powerful and relevant keyword so that the site gets indexed well. If we target relevant keyword with low competition or long tail will help the pages index faster in search engines rather than the highly competitive which would take much time to index.

Though Linkwheel help us to get lot of traffic, we need to work hard and there is no substitute for that. Unless each article in the web 2.0 properties have a unique and well written content and targeted with right keywords, all our painful efforts will be wasted. To be more effective we can create several such Linkwheels around a web site. Thus we can create multiple Linkwheel each targeted to different pages of a website to leverage maximum link juice to that website.
