ed at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s quality guidelines. We’ve always targeted webspam in our rankings, and this algorithm represents another improvement in our efforts to reduce webspam and promote high quality content.”

Google Penguin Update Targets WebSpam

Cutts said that the update targets particular sites that use “black hat webspam” techniques to increase the visibility of websites without any improvement in the quality of content and sites that do not provide information relevant to the search query.

According to Search Engine Land, “Pages that try to gain better rankings through things like keyword stuffing, link schemes, cloaking/ “sneaky” redirects or “doorway” pages and purposeful duplicate content” are referred to as webspam.

On the other hand, Cutts has also highlighted the importance of “white hat” search engine optimization in his blog post. He stressed on the need to create good websites with high quality content that deliver a great user experience.

Cutts pointed out in his blog post, “We want people doing white hat search engine optimization (or even no search engine optimization at all) to be free to focus on creating amazing, compelling websites. As always, we’ll keep our ears open for feedback on ways to iterate and improve our ranking algorithms toward that goal.”

The Penguin update goes live for all languages. Google believes that this update will affect 3% of search queries in English, more than 3% of queries in Chinese, German and Arabic languages and over 5% of queries in Polish. But the impact of this update is much smaller than Google’s Panda update in February which affected nearly 12% of search queries.
