Search operators play a major role in grabbing more resources to build links. But how effectively we using search operators are more important here. We must be innovative in using search operators to gather more resources. Let’s come to a topic, what is footprint? According to Wikipedia “Footprints are the impressions or images left behind by a person walking” but here footprint is a typical text present in certain group of sites. OK how we can use a footprint to gather links. Let us see in this blog,
In query we can use footprints along with search operators or footprints alone to get more resources like directories, social bookmakings, forums, blogs and more.
Example 1: Using search operators to fetch directories.
We know that many directories are scripted by phpLD on the internet and over 100,000 websites scripted by it.
Here is the footprint “php Link Directory” taken from a phpLD scripted directory. Normally in directories footprints are present at the bottom of the page.
Here is what I use,
In this example I searched for US country domain directories. You can narrow your queries for your niche like
- Query: [{keyword} “php Link Directory”]
And you can use “Powered by: PHP Link Directory” footprint too.
Using above method I have got a back link from a high PR .edu site:)
Example 2: To obtain deep link directories,
I think probably deep link directories are hard to get by but we can get the plenty of deep link directories using this query
- Query: [“We accept inside pages of your website to be listed.” inurl:submit.php]
There are so many footprints available in deeplink directories; you can implement your ideas here.
Example 3: To obtain bookmarking sites,
We know many do follow bookmarking sites are scripted by “PHPDUG”,
I see lot of PHPDUG scripted bookmarking sits has title “view all phpDug”, so I made a query like this and get the huge do follow bookmarking site list,
- Query: [“Powered By PHPDug version 2.0.0″ intitle:”view all phpDug”]
Example 4: To obtain blog for commenting,
Extracting blog for commenting is really interesting one because you can use more footprints to track blog, here I am going to use the advantage of wordpress plugins by using the following footprint
“This site uses KeywordLuv. EnterYourName@YourKeywords in the Name field to take advantage.” You can add keywords as a anchored link in these kind of blogs
This will extract wordpress blogs but this will be really handy in SEO prospect in order to improve your keyword rankings.
- Query: [{keyword} “This site uses KeywordLuv. Enter YourName@YourKeywords in the Name field to take advantage.”]
“Notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail” can also be used as a footprint to obtain blogs.
Example 5: Footprints in competitor analysis,
Last but not least we can use footprint in competitor analysis, let us see in this figure
- Query: [linkdomain:www.domain.com “footprints”]
I have use this query in Yahoo.
These are all just basic search operators that have been used with footprints, I display my thoughts here and these footprints can be handle in many ways to get greater results.
And finally I hope this blog will be helpful in gathering some resources and you can share your thoughts too.

Great tips – thanks. I didn;t know about the “inurl” search, I’ll definitely try to use it in the future. When I’m looking to comment on blogs I try to find recently updated ones so my search term usually might have a date in there – maybe “June, 2010” + seo or something like that.
@Mermaid Thanks for ur comment Mermaid, and its really a great tip to find the updated one by adding date with a query. Thanks again.
